Drizzy mentality! A term repeatedly said by the young artiste to describe the versatility of a musician in regards to the kind of genre of music he chooses to do; referenced to the versatile nature of the Canadian rapper Drake aka Drizzy. With reference to this simple laid out explanation, it is only right to describe Na’na Yaw formally known as GMS Deezy as one with a Drizzy mentality.
Na’na Yaw is a 19-year-old Ghanaian musician with creativity and skills like no other rapper of his age discovered. Born in Accra, Ghana, the young artiste is one of a kind and a name to look out for in the next couple of years as he expresses an immense passion for his craft as a musician and proves to be a force to reckon with for most people.
Setting off his music career in 2018 as a hip-hop artiste, Na’na Yaw started out by freestyling over instrumentals of some of his favourite musicians whom he drew inspiration from like J. Cole, Drake, Sarkodie, Kwesi Arthur, Dave, just to mention a few. He started his career by uploading short videos of himself rapping to different kinds of instrumentals not only hip hop, during the last quarter of 2018. This is where the young artiste discovered drill music specifically UK drill and started doing his own ‘thing’ with it.
He went AWOL for the whole of 2019 and returned to the scene again in 2020. After several hours and time spent learning about the new sound of drill music, experimenting and practising, Na’Na Yaw released his first official single in 2020. A drill song titled “DRILLZ” which featured one of Ghana’s best rappers, Eugine A.. Maybe, not a 10/10, but this song helped introduce his brand, sound and what he stood for to new audiences who would go on to become friends and fans of his music. Amidst the positive feedback and criticism he received for the song, Na’Na Yaw learnt from his mistakes, worked more on his craft, and his follow up single was mind-blowing for the fans and people who watched him start out as a young artiste in Ghana. His lyrics, flow, delivery etc had clearly improved since his last single.
The drill song titled “Need I Say More”, released in 2021, clearly was a song that solidified Na’na Yaw’s position as one of Ghana’s best drill rappers. With it being his first single on major music streaming platforms, it has surely amassed quite a good number of streams attesting to how good it was. The song was featured on more than 50 playlists, streamed in over 80 countries etc.
He has gone on to release two more drill songs, ‘Active’ in May 2021, and a Christmas themed drill song in December of the same year titled ‘Get’ Lit’.
With respect to the musician’s versatility, he was featured on Eugine A.’s second “Bucket List ep”. The Hip-hop intro song, “Spit-a-thon”, where both rappers showcased their incredible rapping skills on a well-made sample Hip-hop beat. On this song, Na’Na Yaw clearly showed he still had the Hip-hop guts with him and that he wasn’t only good at drill music but at hip hop as well. This wasn’t the only time he showed his versatility though. The young rapper also released a remix afro version of his drill song ‘Get Lit’ in December 2021 too.
He is bent on showing the world just how versatile he can be by trying on different genres and showing the world a different side of him on his debut mixtape, ‘Difference’, set to be released in early 2022. He tweeted on his Twitter page about how he had to get out of his comfort zone to try different genres and styles of music. According to him, the mixtape includes hip hop songs, drill, R&B/Trapsoul and Trap songs in an effort to express himself in every way he can and to showcase the versatile nature of the young artiste.
